The restaurant was established in 1992 by Rudolf Boy Rist. The name "Havets Helter" (in English "Heroes of the Sea") was inspired by Rists grandsons story of the rescuers Havets Helter. The name symbolises strength and is supposed to tell stories, and honor those who have had, has and will have their job at sea. We have a saying in Norway that goes: "Uten mat og drikke, duger helten ikke" (English translation: "Without drink and food, the hero can do no good"), therefore the Restaurant "Havets Helter" is offering nourishing and tasty food for all heroes.
The Lofot-chef, Mareno Storeide, gave life to this idea, and started to serve the guests "over the top" food discoveries and experiences. As a pioneer when it comes to food traditions from Northern Norway, the Lofot-chef has taken thousands of people on a culinary journey in the culture, humor and food traditions of Lofoten. "My cooking is based on food from the Northern part of Norway and is built upon food traditons from Lofoten and North of Norway. Over the years, I have also implemented ideas from people I have met, and food I have tasted, from many years during my career sailing abroad, from travels and visiting people. News from the kitchen is the scent of The Mediterranien, where I have implemented olive oil and garlic to some of my dishes, to manys amusement, but with great success." This is a quote (translated) from chef Mareno Storeide's Cook Book "A Taste of Lofoten" (2001).
Today Mareno Storeide is Kræmmervika's Grand Old Man, and helps the kithen staff with questions on traditions, food selection and knowledge when it comes to good, old Lofot-traditions.
The Restaurant Havets Helter is today lead by Lofot-Chef Arild Berg, og Restaurant Manager Ola Zätterstöm. Todays menu carries further the tradition with food from Northern Norway. By means of a special designed "food-calender" we give you gastronomic food experiences based on the freshest food available dependent on season. Both the Chef and the Restaurant Manager is very engaged in the voluntary, individual based organisation called: "Slow Food Lofoten", which aim is "to contribute to the food experiences in the region is on the same level as the nature experiences.
